Gigabyte Brix Linux Drivers
Looking for a distro that might work on the Gigabyte BRIX we just picked up. It's a GB-BSi5-6200. So far I've tried OpenSuSE (Stable and Tumbleweed) & Ubuntu (as well as FreeBSD & ReactOS), but none of them will complete a boot. Crashes real quick in the process.
Has anyone installed Mint on a Gigabyte GB-BXA8-5557. What was your experience and can you make any suggestions or recommendations.
If you have experience with a similar mini PC kit, that may be helpful, too. I saw this mini PC kit for sale at a great price - less than $250 with 8GB and a 1T HDD. It has an AMD A8-5557 CPU. This CPU appears to have similar benchmarks to older Core i3s.
The AMD's benchmarks seem far better than the current Pentiums and Celerons, which generally cost as much in a similar box. I plan to use this machine mainly for word processing and spreadsheets, plus web browsing, music and videos, but not much gaming. Any thoughts about this particular CPU? I'm no computer expert, but I'm not afraid of tinkering. Last year, I installed Mint on an old XP computer and, back in the XT days, I built my own computer from components.

Sorry for delay; been trying to get a better handle on the behavior; seems to happen frequently during video playbacks like youtube; but sometime does it when nothing running except desktop. To answer your questions: Crtl + Alt + F1 does NOT return as a console with a prompt; BUT once out of 20 or so times the follow up with Ctrl + Alt + F7 returned a partially functioning desktop.
I have run memtest for an hour with no failures. Looked for additional video drivers; no luck. It runs Intel video driver.
I have a friend who tried pinging it through the network with no results. Latest crash this a.m. Was during a youtube video and looking in CRASH folder the filename points toward the date and time software. Edited by surfsider, 09 June 2017 - 03:41 PM.
